We went to an art museum at UCSB, and art museum staff, Lety and Saehee showed us it. They are very kind and they taught us a lot of things about art. There were many artworks in the art museum, and some were made by Japanese artists.

First of all, we saw art made of many ropes. This work means “developing body”, and it expresses muscles with ropes.

We saw an exhibition about buildings. The artists were Frank Escher and Ravi GuneWardena. They were working with other artists to design topography. They drew the design on paper, and they made models with cardboard. We also saw some pictures of buildings actually built, and some of them were very unique works.

We saw interesting photos, and each had a title. We noticed the name of this exhibition was “About Face”. These were taken by Nell Campbell. She took a lot of photos which she thought were interesting, and she went to various places to take photos that she wanted. There were lots of smiles there. All the smiles were wonderful. When she was a child, she often visited her mother’s countryside, so she was interested in the lives of people different from herself. I felt that many of her works were taken at various places, and some of her works appealed to society. Her photos are so impressive.

We were happy to see mysterious pictures about internal organs, brain, and blood vessels. They were new to us. Works showing food shortage and work expressing the darkness of the mind were also displayed. Among them, the most impressive work is the “ hunger” of David Wojnarowicz. This work is a pictorial representation of how the artist was diagnosed as an AIDS patient.

We went to The Art of Looking: Pattern and Texture. There were many works. The picture of a woman was drawn very delicately and it was so amazing that I could be sucked in. I was moved in the work which seems like a whirlpool of water when light is applied. The flower picture is drawn and it is shaped like a ring, and it was very thin and attractive when you look carefully.

Saehee told us about her future plans and her UCSB life. These were very interesting. She told us why she works there and why she moved from the dorm to an apartment which is near UCSB. The reason why she works there is because when she was a high school student, she was interested in European baroque art, so she decided to study art in university.

The AD&A Museum has many unique works which are created by a lot of artists, and we learned many things about art. It was a nice place, so we want to visit again.
